Medical Policy Premium Deduction

Sir,

Me and my husband are having a joint medical policy, for which we pay total premium of Rs.30000 approx. My query is, can we both claim the deduction of Rs.15000 each in our income tax return ?

Thanks for reply in advance.

By: MEGHA SHRAMA

Dear Megha,

You both can claim the benefit, only if payment has been made by both of you jointly for Rs.15,000 each. To claim the benefit u/s 80D, payment is necessary by assessee.

If you have any question, Pl post the same.

Kind Regards

Who has paid the premium, he/she is able to claim the deduction u/s 80D

By: ANKUR

Deduction u/s 80D is allowed only to the person who paid the premium and it is nothing to do with joint holders of palicy. So, if your husband made the payment then only he can claim deduction u/s 80D.

By: ARPIT AGGARWAL

Dear megha,

For claiming deduction u/s 80D , premium should be paid by the same person. if in your case, you and your husband has made payment separatly  then you both can claim the full deduction in your return. but deduction of `30000 can not be claimed in full by either person
